You may just have a slow phone or the ROM might be slow for some (other) reason. If your phone is slow, this is not the cause of it. The reason you only gain 50 MB when you kill all apps is because only 50 MB will be actually in use by apps and all remaining unused space is used for caching things.

You shouldn't look at the amount of free RAM but rather the amount of actually used RAM is a better indicator. Modern systems don't have "free" and "in use" RAM, they have "free" (wasted space), "in use" and "cached". If you decide to use the music player on the other hand the cached browser can be overwritten with the music player without requiring any additional time, so no harm is done. For example, if your phone is currently only using 20% of your RAM but already caches the browser in case you'll use it soon it will be faster to load the browser.

For example, I know SMS push is in there and running on GalaxySBean although, obviously, it's useless on a Kindle Fire. I see Greenify doesn't do system apps, though, and those are more the ones I think are causing the problem. You may want to try an app called Greenify which will stop those hidden processes if you would like. That's about 200 MB of RAM in hidden processes.
The meter in the "Running" apps in the settings area shows 272 MB in use, while RAM used by the apps listed there only totals about 78. UPDATE: After rebooting and performing the suggested Cache clearings, I started with 142 Mb open and am now at 130 open without touching anything else.
